In this small backyard perimeter bed, we are creating a privacy screen using native hornbeam, serviceberry, and pear trees. Underneath we have installed a shade garden that flows into blueberry-pear guild on the sunnier south-west facing side. The carpinus were selected for strong 2-dimensional architecture and will be pruned to a pleach, a formal wall of grafted trees, over the course of the next few seasons. The pear trees are being trained to an espalier, another style of 2-D pruning for fruit trees, along the fence. We also seeded a diversified lawn including strawberry clover, chamomile, alyssum and english daisies, in front of the garage.
